Mission Statement
S&G's mission is to enable individuals with developmental disabilities to live rather than merely exist. S&G encourages its clients to be active participants rather than passive observers, to take risks, to learn from failures as well as successes, and to take pride and joy in their accomplishments
Unique or Distinctive Qualities
S&G puts special emphasis on two distinct areas:
- Personal Development – It helps clients identify their natural abilities and interests through exposure to a variety of social and recreational activities and programs, including vacations to foreign places, performance arts (e.g. music, dance, acting), and sports (e.g. horseback riding, swimming, Tai Chi, Special Olympics). By broadening their horizons, S&G's residents have choices. Once interests/abilities are identified, S&G builds on them by implementing individual training programs. For example, one of its residents wanted to be able to drivr, so S&G wrote a driver training program for him that helped him prepare for the actual Maryland written test to obtain his driving permit.
- Interpersonal Relationships – S&G recognizes the importance of social contact in every person's life. To that end, S&G encourages frequent contact with clients' biological families, as well as community members. S&G emphasizes the "family" aspect of its group homes by promoting the "team approach" between clients and staff and providing a homelike atmosphere (including family-style dining). S&G also encourages relationships between clients, and it facilitates opportunities for them to meet with other people, both with and without developmental disabilities.

Discuss How Your Agency Has Utilized The "Ask Me!" Survey Results.
S&G was happy to see that the "The Ask Me" report identified several of the same areas as it has done that S&G believes are of greatest importance to persons with developmental disabilities. These include:
- Social Inclusion
- Physical well-being
- Interpersonal Relationships
- Self Determination
- Personal Development
Since S&G focus has been on personal development and interpersonal relationships, it is reminded not to forget the importance of these other areas that are so crucial to a person's success and happiness.
The "Ask Me!" Survey Results is available for the general public.
Describe your quality assurance practices, including any agency accreditations?
- Staff Motivation – S&G has attempted to solve the industry-wide problems of burnout and turnover by adopting two policies: Employee ownership and Job Sharing.
- Monitoring Performance – By using the job-sharing approach, staff are able to work as teams to ensure quality services with fewer errors. In addition, administrative personnel review the performance and accomplishments of each resident and staff monthly. This procedure differs for each resident, and is specified in his/her Individual Plan.
- Self-Governance – S&G makes and revises house policies at its monthly resident/staff meetings using the democratic process in which everyone has an equal voice. Its house rules are designed to protect individual rights and provide guidelines for appropriate social interaction between all those who live and work there. Other ways in which residents can express themselves and resolve problems within the home include the "Comment Box", which is reviewed weekly, and annual surveys on quality of services.
- Standing Committee and Grievance Procedures – The committee meets quarterly on a regular basis, and more often if needed to review and resolve problems. They are also available to residents and their families to serve as a grievance and arbitration committee.
- Organizational Goals &ndash S&G submits annual goals to DDA Quality Assurance. Their committee reviews the goals and either accept them or ask for revisions.
