Located on a 23 acre campus in Hagerstown, MD, Potomac Center is a State residential center established under the Developmental Disabilities Administration at 7-501 of the Health-General Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland. The Center provides individuals admitted there with the appropriate service consistent with the individual's welfare, safety and plan of habilitation. Potomac Center is certified as an Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Mental Retardation (ICFMR) and complies with applicable federal and Maryland laws and regulations. Potomac Center is also accredited by "The Council on Quality and Leadership in Supports for People with Disabilities", a national organization devoted to excellence in the field of developmental disabilities.
To foster individual choice and empowerment, a life planning services' approach is used, with an emphasis on building upon the capacities and gifts inherent of each individual. Outcomes, specific to each individual, guide the staff's decisions on how to continually adapt services to meet individual choices.
Physical Facilities at Potomac Center include five homes, an administration building, maintenance building, activities building, and residents center. Each home is furnished and tastefully decorated to accommodate the needs and desires of each individual. Potomac Center is open throughout the year, and, as part of the community strives to contribute and share its resources.
Potomac Center's services and facilities are available on a non-discriminatory basis inclusive of race, color, sex, or national origin. The same principle applies to the provisions of employment and granting of advantages, privileges, and accommodation.
The Center ensures that qualified individuals with disabilities are given an opportunity to participate in and benefit from DHMH services, programs, benefits, and employment opportunities.
