Supported Employment, Residential Services, Family Support Services, Individual Support Services, Vocational Day Program/Sheltered Workshop, Day Habilitation Program, Individual Family Care, Summer Programs/Camps and Vacations, Community Supported Living Arrangements, Transportation.

Individuals Have the Following Types of Disabilities: Autism, Behavioral Problems Blindness/Severe Visual Impairment, Cerebral Palsy, Chemical Dependency, Deafness/Severe Hearing Impairment, Epilepsy/Seizure Disorder, Mental Disorder, Mental Retardation, and Other Undetermined Disabilities.

Mission Statement

Empowering people with developmental disabilities to enrich their lifes through Melwood's services

Unique or Distinctive Qualities

Vocational, Day Habilitation, Residential, and Individual and Family Support Services are all CARF accredited.

Vocational Services provides employment and training opportunities to approximately 380 individuals, and operates out of 6 different facilities. Services range in nature from drop-in supports, for those who are independently employed in the community, to supervised employment and training for community work crews and enclaves. In addition, there are opportunities for highly structured on-site repetitive work activities designed to promote vocational skills development. Job readiness training and life enrichment programs are also offered. All services are provided based on the preference, skills and desires of persons receiving services in the least restrictive environment.

In addition, Melwood's Vocational Services Division works closely with local school districts to provide job exposure and job development during the student's last year of school in order to promote a seamless transition from school to the world of work.

Case Management, advocacy and nursing services are also provided to ensure that individuals have the opportunity to realize their personal outcomes and highest potential.

Melwood's Residential Services provide 24-hour supports to 3 to 5 adults in beautiful homes in safe neighborhoods throughout Charles and Prince George's counties. Community involvement is a focal point for housemates with many opportunities for recreation. Housemates are encouraged to participate fully in the running of the home from decorating, cooking, and cleaning to interviewing potential staff members. 6 HUD subsidized units provide apartments to individuals who can live independently. Several homes were opened for individuals who can also live independently.

Melwood's Individual and Family Support Services provides assitance to adults, and children in their own homes. Services include training and meal preparation, shopping, community integration, family education and training, case management and referral, assistance with respite and child care costs and assistance purchasing assistive devices. Melwood supports a number of single parents who have developmental disabilities.

Melwood's Recreation Services include programs for children and adults. Melwood's travel staff support individuals going to a variety of destinations from Ocean City to Carribbean cruises. Melwood's children overnight camp is an inclusive program for children (8-16 years old) with and without disabilities. Summer and weekend sessions are held at their beautiful retreat center in Nanjemoy, Maryland.

Melwood continously analyzes ratings from "Ask Me!" Surveys and have included areas that had lower ratings in the development of its five-year strategic plan, most notably its strategic initiative to promote community inclusion. Melwood also reports on the progress its Program Board, Standing Committee and in its annual Quality Assurance Report to DDA.

Administration of Satisfaction Surveys annually to individuals receiving services, caregivers, and stakeholders. Its standing committee reviews and makes recommendations on incident reports, behavior plans. The quality assurance department conducts file reviews and site reviews and training on an on-going basis.
Melwood is accredited by CARF and the American Camping Association.

How Does Your Agency Support People In Becoming Active Members Of Their Community?

Through the team process individual skills, desires and capabilities are assessed. Melwood staff works with the team to access adequate funding and human resources so the person may be an active member of the community, through employment, recreation and living situations. Melwood provide support to individuals in crews and enclaves or in their community employment. Melwood also provides employment planning services, job development, job placement, job coaching and retention supports. Melwood promotes promotes employment, recreation and living situations which are the most independent as possible. Other community resource referrals are also provided in order for individuals to be linked to the community.
