Mission Statement

The Arc of Southern Maryland promotes community involvement, independence, and personal success for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Unique and Distinctive Qualities

The Arc of Southern Maryland's unique strengths include its behavioral support services, a consultation service that has twenty-two contracted psychologists who provide support for families. The Arc of Southern Maryland also has excellent family support and advocacy services, including purchase of medical supplies, specialized and adaptive equipment, installation of ramps, rails or other architectural modification, transportation, assistance with purchase of disponsable diapers, formal or informal counseling, respite care and crisis intervention. All of Arc of Southern Maryland's services are family-centered and tailored to the individual needs of the consumer and his or her family. In keeping with its belief in self-determination, the Arc of Southern Maryland have facilitated the start up of two new teen advocacy groups. The Arc of Southern Maryland hopes to encourage the members to develop friendships and think about their futures while still in school. In addition to this, the Arc of Southern Maryland have maintained three adult self-advocacy groups for many years.

The Arc of Southern Maryland has contracted with the Ask Me! Surveyors on a yearly basis. The Arc Of Southern Maryland uses this information to track, analyze and compare satisfaction levels of the people to whom the Arc of Southern Maryland provides supports and services. The survey results become an important part of its Quality Improvement plan, submitted to the DDA's Quality Assurance Department annually.

Describe your quality assurance practices, including any agency accreditations.

The Arc of Southern Maryland maintains a Quality Improvement Steering Committee that meets quarterly to discuss the goals and objectives of the services provided to its consumers. The objectives include information gleaned from its various databases. Data is maintained to reflect achievement rates in the following categories: Meeting health and safety needs; Incident reporting; Risk management; Behavior plans; Individual plans and personal goals; Customer satisfaction; Training; and Meeting its organizational goals. The Arc of Southern Maryland is licensed by the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration.

How Does Your Agency Support People In Becoming Active Members Of Their Community?

The Arc of Southern Maryland maintains partnerships and connections in its communities through membership with many civic and business organizations (i.e.: Rotary, Lions, Elks, Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, etc.). These partnerships help the Arc of Southern Maryland to provide the people its supports with employment, leisure activities and resources right in their own neighborhoods. The Arc staff facilitate meaningful connections within the community so that it can expand its programs.
